Privacy Policy for Outpost
Last updated: October 15, 2026 · Deutsche Fassung
In short
Outpost does not collect any data about you. The app has no user accounts, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no third-party code. It connects to one place only: your university's Exchange server, using the ID and password you enter. Everything else stays on your device.
Who is responsible
Outpost is developed by Jonathan Hoke, Münster, Germany, as a private, non-commercial project. Contact: dev@drhoke.com.
Your mailbox itself is run by the University of Münster. The university is responsible for the mail, calendar and directory data on its servers, and its own privacy policy applies to them. Outpost only shows you that data on your device; it does not send it anywhere else.
What the app does with your data
Your sign-in
Your university ID and password are sent only to the university's Exchange server (exchange.wwu.de) over an encrypted connection, to sign you in. On the device they are stored in the iOS Keychain with the setting "this device only", which means they are not synced to iCloud and not included in backups. Signing out deletes them.
Mail, calendar and directory
Outpost loads your mail, folders, calendar, out-of-office status and directory lookups from the Exchange server and sends your messages, replies, meeting responses and calendar changes back to it. This is the whole purpose of the app, and it happens only between your device and the university's server.
The offline copy
To keep recent mail readable without the VPN, Outpost stores a copy of recent messages, threads, attachments you opened and your calendar on the device. This copy is protected by iOS file encryption, is excluded from device backups, and is deleted when you sign out. You can also delete it at any time in Settings. Attachments you preview are written to temporary storage and removed afterward.
Contacts (optional)
If you allow it, Outpost reads your iPhone contacts to show contact photos next to the people who write to you. Contacts are only read, never changed, and they never leave the device. You can turn this off in the iOS Settings app under Privacy & Security › Contacts.
Recipient suggestions and diagnostics
Outpost remembers addresses you have written to, to suggest them when you write again, and keeps a technical log of recent requests for the Diagnostics screen. Both stay on the device and are deleted when you sign out. The diagnostics report only leaves the device if you copy or share it yourself.
Remote content in messages
Outpost does not load images or other content from the internet when you open a message. This prevents senders from learning when or whether you read their mail.
What the app does not do
- It does not send any data to the developer or to any third party.
- It does not use analytics, crash reporting, advertising or tracking services.
- It does not track you across apps or websites and does not use the advertising identifier.
Apple may share crash reports and usage statistics with developers if you have turned on "Share With App Developers" in the iOS Settings app (Privacy & Security › Analytics & Improvements). These reports are anonymous, are handled by Apple under Apple's privacy policy, and can be switched off there at any time.
The App Review demo mailbox
Outpost contains a demo mailbox with made-up content, used by Apple during App Review. It is stored on the device only and never connects to any server.
This website
dev.drhoke.com uses no cookies, no analytics and no external services; its fonts are served from this site itself. When you open a page, the web hosting provider processes the technical data your browser sends (such as your IP address, the time and the page requested) to deliver the page and to keep the server secure, as part of its standard server logs. The privacy policy of drhoke.com covers this in detail, and the Impressum applies to this site as well.
Your rights
Because the developer does not receive any personal data through the app, there is nothing the developer can show, correct or delete for you. For the data in your mailbox, please contact the University of Münster, which runs the Exchange server. Under the GDPR you have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority; for North Rhine-Westphalia this is the Landesbeauftragte für Datenschutz und Informationsfreiheit Nordrhein-Westfalen.
Changes
If Outpost ever starts handling data differently, this page will be updated before that version is released, and the date at the top will change.
Datenschutzhinweise für Outpost
Stand: 15. Oktober 2026
Kurz gesagt
